The Matterhorn Story

HISTORY OF THE MATTERHORN:

Eventually in the year 1865, the Matterhorn was climbed for the first time. The most ancient name for the Matterhorn was Mont Silvius. Later people called it the Hirschberg, or Stag mountain because its shape resembled that of stag: on that account it was also called Montagne du Cerf, Cervino, or Cervin and later Matterhorn. To the natives it is simply "Das Hore."

The old people regarded the summit with awe and respect and it is good to know that one of the younger generation said, "One should go on mountains as if in church; and on the summit one should be as pure and holy as before the alter."

On 14th of July, climbers stood for the first time on the summit of the Matterhorn. Early in the morning they started the climb, and by midday they were on the summit. Their delight knew no bounds...
